Ibrahim Nasir International Airport more commonly known as Malé International Airport, is the main and only international airport in the Maldives. It is located on Hulhulé Island in the North Malé Atoll, nearby the capital island Malé. The Maldives Tourism Promotion Board has an information counter for the convenience of tourists visiting Maldives. Duty free shopping is available in the departure terminal of Male’ International Airport, where there are specialised shops for electrical goods, watches, cameras, fashion, liquor, jewellery, tobacco and more. Distance from the airport to some popular destinations in the Maldives include: One&Only Reethi Rah – 35km/45 mins by luxury yacht Kanuhura – 150km/35 mins by seaplane. Maldives has a tropical climate with two monsoons. The rainy south-west monsoon lasts from April to October, when there are brief downpours followed by sunshine. The less rainy north-east monsoon occurs from December to March, when weather is light and fairly dry. The average temperature ranges from 25°C to 30°C and is highest in April and May.

The main place to do shopping in the Maldives will be in the capital of Male, Chandhanee Magu and majeedhee Magu are two more popular shopping places in the city. Local craftsmanship can be found in things like wood carvings, teas, key rings, napkin rings, fridge magnets and mats. Please note that the Maldives Government has banned export of products made of turtle shell, black coral, pearl oyster shell and red coral. So, don’t deal in these items.

Passports and Visas

Maldives Passports and Visas Entry permits are granted to visitors on arrival at designated ports of entry. Visitors entering Maldives should possess the following to obtain an entry permit: a valid passport, a valid return air ticket and a minimum of US$30.00 per person per day or confirmed hotel reservations.

Health

It is advised that you ensure that your hepatitis and typhoid vaccination be up to date before traveling to the Maldives. If you are coming from a yellow fever source country, you need to ensure your yellow fever vaccinations and their certificates are up to date, as customs may ask for these upon your entry into the Maldives. It is advisable to pack an adequate supply of essentials such as painkillers, plasters, sun block, antihistamines, anti-nausea and anti-diarrheal. Please keep personal medication in your hand luggage and not in your suitcase. It is also advised to consume only bottled water. You are allowed to bring in one month’s supply of pharmaceutical drugs or medicines for your personal use. Any other pharmaceutical drugs or medicines must be accompanied by a letter or certified prescription from a registered physician, and have to be declared.

Communication

Telephone, fax and internet facilities are available at all resorts. To use your mobile phone you will need to activate your international roaming at least 10 days before you depart. International roaming is not available on prepaid packages.

Travel Insurance

You are advised to obtain travel insurance covering personal accident, medical expenses, emergency repatriation, baggage loss and loss of funds through cancellation or curtailment. Speak to your travel agent about the various options available.

Customs Allowance

Certain duty-free allowances are available to visitors over the age of 16. This includes 200 cigarettes or 25 cigars or 200g of tobacco, and a reasonable quantity of Eau de Toilette. Exceeding duty-free allowances may result in extra duty charges or confiscation of goods. It’s important to note that while you can drink alcohol in all resorts, it’s illegal to import any alcoholic drinks. A doctor’s prescription is required for all medication.
