AIRPORT

Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is the main airport in Zanzibar and located about 5 kilometres South of Zanzibar City. Shuttle and taxi services to the city are available. Airport facilities include an outgoing duty free store, car hire, post office, banking and currency exchange , plus a bar and restaurant. Distance from the airport to some popular destinations on the island include:

6 degrees below the equator Zanzibar enjoys great holiday weather year-round. The summer heat of 30 to 35 degree’s, is usually cooled by a pleasant sea breeze, especially on the North and East coasts. Zanzibar experiences about seven to eight hours of sunlight daily.

Historically Stone Town was a major trading hub on Africa’s east coast, and still is a shopping haven today. Local craftsmanship is evident in objects and items like Zanzibar chests, jewellery, clothing, shells, spices, local rum, stamps, souvenirs, art and handicrafts. Visit the multi cultured markets in Stone town and experience some friendly haggling with local traders. Take note, that certain marine items are prohibited from being sold, ask your guide for more information.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

You are advised to obtain travel insurance covering personal accident, medical expenses, emergency repatriation, baggage loss and loss of funds through cancellation or curtailment. Speak to your travel agent about the various options available. 
 

CUSTOMS ALLOWANCE

Certain duty-free allowances are available to visitors over the age of 16. This includes 200 cigarettes or 25 cigars or 250g of tobacco, 1 litre of liquor and 570ml of Eau de Toilette. Exceeding duty-free allowances may result in extra duty charges or confiscation of goods. 
 

CAR HIRE

Vehicles are available for hire through one of the rental companies based in Stone Town. Drivers must be between 25 and 70 years old, have held a drivers licence for a minimum of 2 years and must hold an International Driving Permit. Vehicles drive on the left hand side of the road in Zanzibar.

HEALTH

Zanzibar falls within a malaria area and your health practitioner should be consulted prior to your visit. It is also important to note that some source countries require that citizens are vaccinated against yellow fever before travelling to Zanzibar, and where this is the case, immigration authorities will require your vaccination certificate upon your return.

It is advisable to pack an adequate supply of essentials such as painkillers, plasters, sun block, antihistamines, anti-nausea and anti-diarrheal. Please keep personal medication in your hand luggage and not in your suitcase. It is also advised to consume only bottled water.

Telephone, fax and internet facilities are available at all resorts. To use your mobile phone you will need to activate your international roaming at least 10 days before you depart. International roaming is not available on prepaid packages.
